কথা অনুযায়ী, এক নগরে দুই বোন - উমনো ও ঝুমনো - ছিলো। দুজনের বিয়ে ভালো ঘরে হয়েছিলো, কিন্তু আস্তে আস্তে তাঁদের শ্বশুরবাড়ির ঐশ্বর্য নষ্ট হয়ে গেলো আর দারিদ্র্য ও কষ্ট তাঁদেরকে ঘিরে ফেললো। দুঃখতে দুই বোন বুঝে উঠতে পারছিলো না কী করবে।
একদিন তাঁরা এক বৃদ্ধা (কিছু কথায় ব্রাহ্মণ-পত্নী)-র দেখা পেলো। বোনদের কথা শুনে তিনি তাঁদেরকে ইতু (সূর্য) ব্রত-এর বিধি ও মহিমা বললেন - "অগ্রহায়ণের প্রতি রবিবার, শুদ্ধতা ও নিয়মের সঙ্গে ঘট স্থাপন করে, সূর্য দেবকে জল-ধূপ অর্পণ করো আর শ্রদ্ধায় তাঁর উপাসনা করো। ব্রতের নিয়ম - পরিষ্কার-পরিচ্ছন্নতা, সত্য-বচন ও সংযম - পুরো পালন করো। সূর্য দেবের কৃপায় তোমাদের দারিদ্র্য দূর হবে।"
দুই বোন শ্রদ্ধা ও পুরো নিয়মে চারো রবিবার ইতু ব্রত করলো। ঘটে বোনা বীজ সবুজ হয়ে অঙ্কুরিত হলো, আর তার সঙ্গেই তাঁদের জীবনেও শুভতা অঙ্কুরিত হতে লাগলো।
সূর্য দেবের কৃপায় উমনো ও ঝুমনোর ঘর থেকে দারিদ্র্য দূর হলো। তাঁদের শ্বশুরবাড়িতে আবার ধন-ধান্য, সুখ-সমৃদ্ধি ও সন্তান-সুখ এলো, আর দুই পরিবার আবার খুশহাল হয়ে গেলো। তবে থেকে বাংলায় মেয়েরা পরিবারের কল্যাণ ও সমৃদ্ধির জন্য ইতু ব্রত শ্রদ্ধায় করে।
