When is this aarti sung?

At Ganga Dussehra and Ganga Saptami, on Kartik Purnima and Makar Sankranti, and at every evening Ganga aarti on the ghats of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi. At home it is sung when Ganga jal is used in a puja.

Why is a river addressed as mother?

Because the tradition treats the Ganga as a devi who descended, not as water that happens to be holy - brought down by Bhagirath for his ancestors and received in Shiva's hair. The aarti therefore asks her for the same thing a mother is asked for: to carry her children across.

How is the aarti done at the ghats?

With tiered lamps raised and circled towards the water while bells and conches sound, and small deep-dan lamps on leaf boats set floating. At home a single ghee lamp before a pot of Ganga jal is the same act on a smaller scale.

What does the aarti say Ganga jal does?

That a drop of it removes the accumulated sin of many births and grants a place at Hari's feet. In practice this is why Ganga jal is kept in every household shrine and used for abhishek, sankalpa and the final rites.

What should not be put into the river?

Nothing that does not return to it - no plastic, no polythene, no synthetic cloth, and no oil-soaked wrappings. Nirmalya and flowers go in freely; everything else belongs in a bin, and the tradition of reverence is the argument for it, not merely the law.
