What is on the Lakshmi puja list?
The common essentials with the items Maa Lakshmi is worshipped with - lotus flowers, kamalgatta, red and pink flowers, kheel-batasha, a silver or Lakshmi-Ganesh coin, cowrie shells, the Shri Yantra, itra, red cloth and white or kesar sweets.
Why the lotus and kamalgatta?
Because the lotus is her own seat and emblem - she is Kamala, the one of the lotus. Where fresh lotus is not available, kamalgatta, the dried lotus seeds, are offered in its place, and they are also strung and kept in the place where money is stored.
Is Ganesha worshipped alongside her?
Yes, and it is the usual practice - Ganesha first, as the remover of obstacles, then Lakshmi. Household and Diwali pujas keep the two together, which is why the coin bearing both is on this list.
What matters besides the items?
Cleanliness and order, which the tradition treats as part of the offering rather than as preparation for it. Lakshmi is said to stay where the house is clean, the lamps lit and the accounts honest, and to leave where there is neglect. A modest puja in a well-kept home is the point.
