What does the Diwali puja need?
Lakshmi-Ganesh idols in clay or silver, a large number of earthen diyas, kheel-batasha, kamalgatta, lotus and marigold, gomti chakra and cowrie, a silver or Lakshmi-Ganesh coin, the account book, the Shri Yantra, and sweets and dry fruits.
Why are the account books worshipped?
Because the new financial year of the traders begins here. The bahi-khata is placed before Lakshmi, marked with swastika and shubh-labh, and the first entry made after the puja - a custom kept by business houses across north and west India.
What are gomti chakra and kaudi for?
Both are offered to Lakshmi and then kept - the gomti chakra, a small spiral stone from the Gomti, and cowrie shells, traditionally stored with money or in the safe after the puja as tokens of her presence. They are kept rather than consumed.
When should the puja be done?
On the Diwali Amavasya evening, in the pradosh-kaal window after sunset, and by preference in a sthira lagna - Vrishabha being the one most often chosen for households. The muhurat differs by city, so check the timing for yours.
How many diyas, and where?
As many as the house can hold, lit after the puja: at the threshold, on the boundary wall, at the tulsi, by the water source and one placed facing south for Yama. Earthen lamps with mustard or sesame oil are the traditional form.
