Frequently asked questions about Saraswati Puja Samagri List
What does a Saraswati puja need?
The common essentials plus what belongs to her: white and yellow flowers, yellow or white cloth, yellow sandalwood and saffron, boondi or kheer, and ber and sugarcane with the seasonal fruit. Books, pens and instruments are placed before her as part of the puja.
Why are books and instruments placed at her feet?
Because the puja is offered by students and artists for their own work. Placing books, a pen, a notebook or an instrument before the Goddess asks her blessing on the thing itself, and many families keep the custom of not studying or playing on the day of the puja, taking them back only afterwards.
When is it performed?
Chiefly on Vasant Panchami, the Panchami of Magha Shukla Paksha, and in Bengal it is the great household festival of the spring. She is also worshipped on the Navami of Navratri and at the start of any course of learning.
Why yellow and white?
White for her own form - the white sari, the white swan, the untinted clarity of knowledge - and yellow for the season of Vasant, the mustard fields in flower. Both colours run through the clothes, flowers, sandalwood and sweets on this list.
Why ber and sugarcane?
Because Vasant Panchami is when they first come in, and the tradition offers the season's first fruit to the Goddess before it is eaten in the house. It is a small custom, but it is why these two are named specifically rather than fruit in general. This page is the packing list; the steps of worship are on the Saraswati puja vidhi, and the story of a fast sits under Vrat Katha.
