The right for a boy and the left for a girl, in the usual reckoning, with a gold needle or a gold wire in the traditional rite. Families now often have a jeweller or a clinic do it on the chosen day.

The tradition treats it as one of the sixteen sanskars and speaks of it as protective and as preparing the child for the mantras heard later. Ayurveda adds its own reasoning about the point pierced.
