Who is Gayatri Mata?

The Gayatri mantra worshipped as a goddess - Vedmata, the mother of the Vedas, and the light of Savita that the mantra asks to illumine the intellect. The aarti calls her Aadi Shakti and Brahmarupini, so it is the mantra itself being praised in a personal form.

When is it sung?

At sandhya, the morning and evening junctions, after the Gayatri japa; at Gayatri Jayanti on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami; and in Gayatri parivar households as the daily upasana. Sunrise is the favoured moment.

Do I need initiation to sing this aarti?

No. Formal japa of the mantra with a mala is traditionally taken from a guru, but the aarti is a household devotional song and is open to everyone, women and men alike. Sing it and, if you wish to go further, seek the initiation separately.

What does the aarti ask for?

Sat maarag par hamein chalao - set us walking on the path of truth. Then the removal of sorrow, fear, quarrel and poverty. It is a prayer for right direction first and relief second, in that order.

Is it connected with the Gayatri mantra japa?
