Ek baar Maata Parvati aur Bhagwan Shiv Kailash par chaupar (paasha) ka khel khel rahe the. Khel mein haar-jeet ka nirnay karne ke liye koi teesra vyakti vahaan na tha. Tab unhone ghaas-phoos ka ek putla banaaya aur usmein praan daalkar use nirnaayak (referee) niyukt kiya aur khel aarambh kiya.

Khel kai baar khela gaya aur har baar Maata Parvati hi vijayi rahin. Par khel ke ant mein, jab us baalak se poochha gaya ki kaun jeeta, to bhool-vash ya bhay-vash usne Bhagwan Shiv ka naam le diya. Galat nirnay sunkar Maata Parvati krodhit ho gayin aur baalak ko langda (apaahij) hone ka shraap de diya.

Baalak ne girgiraakar kshama maangi - "He Maata, maine jaan-boojhkar asatya nahi kaha, yeh meri anjaane mein hui bhool hai." Daya-mayi Maata ka hriday pighal gaya. Unhone kaha - "Shraap to vyarth nahi jaa sakta, par main upaay bataati hoon. Yahaan Naag-kanyaayein puja karne aayengi; ve tujhe Sankashti Chaturthi ke Shri Ganesh vrat ki vidhi bataayengi. Us vrat ko shraddha se karne par tera kasht door hoga."

Naag-kanyaaon ke batae anusaar baalak ne poore vishwaas aur shraddha se Krishna paksha ki Chaturthi ko Shri Ganesh ka vrat kiya, chandrma ko arghya diya aur vidhivat puja ki. Vighnaharta Shri Ganesh prasann hue aur baalak ka langdapan poori tarah door ho gaya. Usne Ganesh ji se apne maata-pita (Kailash) tak pahunchne ki shakti maangi aur prapt ki.

Aage chalkar, jab kabhi Maata Parvati Bhagwan Shiv se rooth kar Kailash chhod deti, to Ganesh ji ke isi Sankashti vrat ke prabhav se hi unke parivaar mein phir se milan aur sukh-shaanti laut aati. Tabse drid maanyata hai ki har maas ki Krishna paksha Chaturthi ko Shri Ganesh ka vrat karne se sab "sankat" (vighna) door ho jaate hain.

Seekh: Sankashti Chaturthi vrat Vighnaharta Shri Ganesh ko samarpit hai. Chandra-darshan ke baad arghya dekar vrat khola jaata hai; isse vighna, rog, sankat aur kalah door hote hain - anjaane mein hui bhool ka bhi shraddha se nivaaran sambhav hai.

एक बार माता पार्वती और भगवान शिव कैलाश पर चौपर (पासा) का खेल खेल रहे थे। खेल में हार-जीत का निर्णय करने के लिए कोई तीसरा व्यक्ति वहाँ न था। तब उन्होंने घास-फूस का एक पुतला बनाया और उसमें प्राण डालकर उसे निर्णायक नियुक्त किया और खेल आरंभ किया।

खेल कई बार खेला गया और हर बार माता पार्वती ही विजयी रहीं। पर खेल के अंत में, जब उस बालक से पूछा गया कि कौन जीता, तो भूल-वश या भय-वश उसने भगवान शिव का नाम ले दिया। ग़लत निर्णय सुनकर माता पार्वती क्रोधित हो गईं और बालक को लँगड़ा (अपाहिज) होने का शाप दे दिया।

बालक ने गिड़गिड़ाकर क्षमा माँगी - "हे माता, मैंने जान-बूझकर असत्य नहीं कहा, यह मेरी अनजाने में हुई भूल है।" दया-मयी माता का हृदय पिघल गया। उन्होंने कहा - "शाप तो व्यर्थ नहीं जा सकता, पर मैं उपाय बताती हूँ। यहाँ नाग-कन्याएँ पूजा करने आएँगी; वे तुझे संकष्टी चतुर्थी के श्री गणेश व्रत की विधि बताएँगी। उस व्रत को श्रद्धा से करने पर तेरा कष्ट दूर होगा।"

नाग-कन्याओं के बताए अनुसार बालक ने पूरे विश्वास और श्रद्धा से कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी को श्री गणेश का व्रत किया, चंद्रमा को अर्घ्य दिया और विधिवत पूजा की। विघ्नहर्ता श्री गणेश प्रसन्न हुए और बालक का लँगड़ापन पूरी तरह दूर हो गया। उसने गणेश जी से अपने माता-पिता (कैलाश) तक पहुँचने की शक्ति माँगी और प्राप्त की।

आगे चलकर, जब कभी माता पार्वती भगवान शिव से रूठकर कैलाश छोड़ देतीं, तो गणेश जी के इसी संकष्टी व्रत के प्रभाव से ही उनके परिवार में फिर से मिलन और सुख-शांति लौट आती। तबसे दृढ़ मान्यता है कि हर मास की कृष्ण पक्ष चतुर्थी को श्री गणेश का व्रत करने से सब "संकट" (विघ्न) दूर हो जाते हैं।

शिक्षा: संकष्टी चतुर्थी व्रत विघ्नहर्ता श्री गणेश को समर्पित है। चंद्र-दर्शन के बाद अर्घ्य देकर व्रत खोला जाता है; इससे विघ्न, रोग, संकट और कलह दूर होते हैं - अनजाने में हुई भूल का भी श्रद्धा से निवारण संभव है।
