Frequently asked questions about Hanuman Chalisa
Who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa?
Goswami Tulsidas, the sixteenth-century poet of the Ramcharitmanas, in Awadhi. He signs it in the closing doha - Tulsidas sada Hari chera - which is one reason its authorship is beyond dispute, unlike most chalisas.
How many verses does it have?
Forty chaupais, which is what chalisa means, framed by two opening dohas and one closing doha. So a full recitation is forty-three verses; the count of forty refers only to the body.
How many times should it be recited?
Once a day is the ordinary practice. For a specific difficulty devotees take a sankalpa of seven, eleven or forty days, or recite it eight or eleven times in one sitting; the hundred-and-eight recitation is undertaken as a vow rather than casually. Any count kept honestly is better than a larger one abandoned.
Which day and time are best?
Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman's days, and dawn or the evening lamp are the usual times. Facing east or north, after a bath, with a ghee or chameli-oil lamp lit - and many recite it at night too, since it is the classic prayer against fear.
What does Bhoot pishach nikat nahin aave mean?
No evil spirit comes near one who chants the mighty name of Mahavira. It is the verse most often recited on its own for protection, and the reason the Chalisa is read in a new house, on a journey and at a sickbed.
What is read after it?
The Hanuman aarti with a lamp, then the prasad - a boondi laddu, gud-chana or a banana. Those who want a longer path read the Sundarkand and finish with the Chalisa and aarti.
About the Hanuman Chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa - Goswami Tulsidas's beloved forty-verse hymn to Lord Hanuman, recited for courage, protection and the removal of troubles.
A chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty (chalis) verses (chaupais), framed by opening and closing dohas (couplets). The Hanuman Chalisa above is given in both Hindi (Devanagari) and English (Hinglish, Roman script) so you can read it in whichever script you are most comfortable with - switch between the two using the buttons above. It is traditionally recited with devotion, often after a bath and before the deity, especially on the day associated with the deity.
A chalisa is forty verses. It is not the short lamp-song (that is an aarti) and not a longer Sanskrit stotram. Other forty-verse hymns are on the Chalisa index. For japa of a compact formula use a mantra. If you are keeping a fast, the story is under Vrat Katha.
