What is needed for Karwa Chauth?
The karwa with its lid, a sieve, the sixteen sringar articles, mehndi, a Karwa Mata picture or calendar, clay Gauri-Ganesh, sweets and mathri for the baya and sargi, gifts and dakshina, and the katha book - along with the common puja essentials.
What is the karwa itself?
The spouted earthen pot that gives the festival its name. It is filled with water, marked with roli, and the water is used to offer arghya to the moon; a second karwa is often given to the mother-in-law or exchanged with other women as part of the baya.
What is sargi and what is baya?
Sargi is the pre-dawn meal, traditionally sent by the mother-in-law, eaten before the fast begins. Baya is the plate of sweets, mathri, fruit and gifts given to her in the evening. Buy for both - the sargi items the day before, the baya on the day.
Why the sieve?
The moon is viewed through the chhalni and then the husband, a custom widely connected to the katha in which Veervati's brothers lit a lamp behind a sieve to counterfeit the moon. Not every family follows it; some offer arghya directly.
When should the shopping be done?
