What is needed for Janmashtami?
A Laddu Gopal or Krishna idol, a jhula or cradle, new clothes and ornaments, a mor mukut, makhan-mishri, dhaniya panjiri, tulsi leaves, a peacock feather and flute, panchamrit for the abhishek, and a cucumber for the janma ritual.
Why a cucumber?
It stands for the birth itself. A kheera with its stalk is cut at midnight to represent the severing of the cord, and the idol is then bathed, dressed and placed in the cradle. It is a small ritual but it is why the item is on the list.
When is the puja done?
At midnight - the nishita kaal of the Ashtami - since that is the hour of his birth. The fast is kept through the day and broken after the midnight abhishek, aarti and prasad, or the next morning in some traditions.
What is dhaniya panjiri?
Ground coriander seed roasted in ghee with sugar and dry fruit, the classic Janmashtami prasad, made because coriander is permitted on a fasting day when grain flour is not. Makhan-mishri and kheer are offered with it.
What should be read or sung?
