Frequently asked questions about Shiva Puja Samagri List

What does a Shiva puja need?

The common puja essentials, plus what belongs to Shiva: bel patra, dhatura, bhang, aak flowers, white flowers, shami leaves, bhasma, rudraksha and white sandalwood - and for the abhishek, raw milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, Gangajal, sugarcane juice and rose water.

What must not be offered to Shiva?

Three things are firmly excluded. Tulsi is not offered to Shiva, the ketaki or kewda flower is not offered because of the account in the Shiva Purana, and haldi is kept out of a Shiva puja. Use bel patra, white flowers, bhasma and chandan instead.

How should bel patra be offered?

Whole and unbroken, three leaves together, with the smooth side facing the Shivling, washed and offered with water. Bel patra is not plucked on a Monday, on Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami or Chaturdashi, or on Amavasya - so it is gathered the day before and kept fresh.

Do I need all the abhishek liquids?

No. Plain water is a complete abhishek in itself, and the tradition ranks the devotion above the ingredients. Where you can, milk and Gangajal are the two most commonly added; the full panchamrit is for a larger Rudrabhishek.

When is a Shiva puja best done?

Mondays and the pradosh-kaal twilight of Trayodashi are the usual times, with Masik Shivratri monthly and Mahashivratri as the great night. Daily worship at home needs no special day at all.
