What does Navratri at home need?
The Ghatasthapana items - kalash, mango leaves, coconut, clay pot and soil for the barley sowing - with an akhand jyot, red chunari, sringar for the Mother, red flowers and bel patra, the Durga Saptashati, and the bhog and kanya-pujan food.
What is the barley sowing?
Jau sown in a clay pot of soil on the first day, beside the kalash, and watered through the nine days. How it grows is read as a sign for the household, and the shoots are distributed on the tenth day. Sow it on the morning of Pratipada, in the Ghatasthapana muhurat.
What does the akhand jyot require?
Nine days of continuous burning, which means a wide lamp, a steady supply of ghee or sesame oil, thick cotton wicks and someone to check it several times a day. Place it in a sheltered spot away from draughts, and do not begin one unless the house will be occupied throughout.
What is needed for the kanya pujan?
Halwa, puri and black chana, along with a small gift, a coin and a chunari for each girl, done on Ashtami or Navami. Decide the number of girls in advance so the food and gifts are enough.
When are the dates?
Sharad Navratri runs from the Pratipada of Ashwin Shukla Paksha; the Shardiya Navratri calendar gives the nine days and the Ghatasthapana timing, and Chaitra Navratri covers the spring one.
