What is a hora?
A planetary hour, and the oldest unit of electional astrology. Sunrise to sunset divides into 12 day-horas and sunset to sunrise into 12 night-horas, giving 24 per Hindu day, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets. This is not Hora Lagna, the natal wealth point - that lives on the Hora Lagna + Ghati Lagna calculator - and not the Hora (D2) Chart of wealth.
Why are horas not exactly 60 minutes?
Because each is one-twelfth of the local daylight or night length, which changes with the season and your latitude. In summer the day-horas stretch past an hour and the night-horas shrink; in winter it reverses. That is why the schedule is computed from your city's actual sunrise and sunset.
How is the sequence decided?
The first hora after sunrise is always ruled by the lord of the weekday, then the Chaldean order follows: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, cycling continuously. This is actually why the weekdays carry the names they do, in Sanskrit and in English alike.
Which hora should I use for what?
Jupiter for education, ceremonies, finance and new beginnings - the most auspicious. Mercury for study, trade and writing; Venus for relationships and art; the Sun for official and authority matters; the Moon for travel and public dealings. Mars and Saturn suit hard, physical work rather than auspicious starts.
Is a hora enough for an important decision?
No - it is a quick everyday tool. For a wedding or housewarming, combine a good hora with a supportive tithi and nakshatra and confirm the full muhurat. Hora is for choosing when to make a call, not when to marry.
