Hora Lagna + Ghati Lagna Calculator
Frequently asked questions about Hora Lagna + Ghati Lagna
How are Hora Lagna and Ghati Lagna calculated?
From local sunrise, take the ishta kaala (time to birth) and add it to the Sun's longitude at sunrise. Hora Lagna advances one rasi every hora (60 minutes, or 2.5 ghatis). Ghati Lagna advances one rasi every ghati (24 minutes). A birth before sunrise is counted from the previous sunrise. This is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 5.
Is this the same as Daily Hora or the Vedic Time clock?
No. Daily Hora splits sunrise-to-sunset into twelve planetary hours for choosing a time today. Vedic Time is the ghati-pala clock of the current day. Hora (D2) Chart is the second divisional chart of wealth. Hora Lagna and Ghati Lagna are natal points in the birth chart, used for wealth and power. Same words, different tools.
How is this different from the Ascendant or Arudha Lagna?
The Janma Lagna is the sign rising at birth and frames the whole chart. Arudha Lagna is the image the world holds of you. Hora Lagna is read for money and resources; Ghati Lagna for status and authority. They sit in the chart as extra lagnas, not as replacements.
Does Hora Lagna in the 8th or 12th mean I will be poor?
No. Those houses describe how wealth arrives, not a verdict of poverty. An 8th-house Hora Lagna often marks money through shared resources, research or other people; the 12th through foreign lands or letting go. Dusthana placement asks for care, not fatalism, and it cannot cancel a strong 2nd or 11th house in the natal chart.
How exact does the birth time need to be?
More exact than for the Moon sign. Hora Lagna changes sign about every hour; Ghati Lagna about every 24 minutes. Ten minutes can keep Hora Lagna in the same sign and still push Ghati Lagna across a boundary. Pick the city from the dropdown so sunrise is for that place, and use the recorded time. For the full natal chart, use Kundli Maker.
What is Bhava Lagna?
The third special lagna in the same chapter. It advances one rasi every 5 ghatis (two hours) from the sunrise Sun, slower than Hora Lagna. It is a supporting clock for the body and circumstances. This page shows it beside Hora and Ghati Lagna; it is not a substitute for the Janma Lagna.
What are Hora Lagna and Ghati Lagna?
Hora Lagna and Ghati Lagna are the special lagnas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 5. From sunrise, the ishta kaala (time elapsed to birth) is added to the Sun's longitude at sunrise. Hora Lagna advances one rasi every hora (60 minutes) and is read for wealth. Ghati Lagna advances one rasi every ghati (24 minutes) and is read for power, status and authority. They are not the ordinary Janma Lagna.
They are also not the planetary hours of Daily Hora, and not the ghati-pala clock on Vedic Time. Those tools share the words hora and ghati; this calculator answers a different question. For how the world sees you, use Arudha Lagna. Bhava Lagna, the third special lagna in the same chapter, is shown as a supporting point.
Enter the exact birth time and pick the city from the dropdown so sunrise is right for that place. A few minutes can move Ghati Lagna into the next sign. Results are free to share or save as a PDF. Editorial pages are reviewed by Astro Arpita Nath.
