Are we obliged to use the syllable the chart gives?

It is a custom, not a rule. Many families use the Nakshatra syllable for the formal Namkaran name recited at the ceremony and choose the everyday calling name freely - that is a widely accepted practice and not seen as a compromise. Others use the syllable for both. Either way, no harm is attached to choosing differently.

Why does each pada have its own sound?

Because the 27 Nakshatras are each quartered, giving 108 padas, and the tradition assigns one syllable to each. Grouping them differently produces the twelve Rashis of nine padas each. The syllable is tied to the pada rather than the whole star, which is why an accurate birth time matters - the Moon crosses a pada in roughly six hours.

The Nakshatra gives very few name options. What now?

Does the chosen name shape the destiny?

The tradition holds that a name tuned to the birth star keeps the child in harmony with their own chart, and it is treated as an auspicious beginning rather than a mechanism. Nobody in the classical literature claims a name overrides the chart. Choose something you are happy to say a hundred times a day; that matters too.

Our daughter was born last month and the Nakshatra syllable the tool gives us does not go with any name we like. How binding is the Nakshatra first letter really, and does using a different starting sound affect the child in any way an astrologer would worry about?
