Frequently asked questions about Gujarati Panchang
Why does the Samvat year change at Diwali here?
Because Gujarat rolls the Vikram Samvat over at Kartika Shukla Pratipada - Bestu Varas, the day after Diwali - rather than at Chaitra. For the stretch between Chaitra and Kartika the Gujarati figure therefore runs one behind the north Indian one.
Which month reckoning is used?
Amanta, each lunar month closing at the new moon, so Kartika opens the year and Ashwin closes it. That is why the Gujarati month name of a Krishna Paksha day differs from a Hindi panchang.
Which days matter most to a Gujarati household?
Bestu Varas, Labh Pancham for opening the year\'s trade, Sharda Pujan of the account books at Diwali, Uttarayan at Makar Sankranti, and the nine nights of Navratri. The Gujarati calendar lists them across the year.
What is Labh Pancham?
The fifth day of Kartika Shukla, when shops reopen after Diwali and the first transaction of the new year is made. Many businesses treat it as the working new year even though Bestu Varas is the calendrical one.
