Frequently asked questions about ISKCON Calendar
What does the ISKCON calendar list?
The Gaudiya Vaishnava year - every Ekadashi with its fasting and paran window, the appearance days of Krishna, Chaitanya and the acharyas, Jhulan and Kartik, and Gaura Purnima, month by month.
What is the Gaurabda era?
The era counted from the appearance of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in 1486, used across the Gaudiya tradition. The ISKCON Panchang shows it day by day.
Why does the Ekadashi date differ from other calendars?
Because Gaudiya Vaishnavas follow their own rule for which day carries the fast when the tithi is short or overlapping, and they observe the paran within a set window the next morning. The date can therefore fall a day after a general Hindu almanac.
What is not eaten on Ekadashi in this tradition?
All grains and pulses, and notably beans and lentils - the rule is stricter than the general Hindu observance. The Ekadashi calendar lists every date, and the Ekadashi vrat vidhi the permitted foods.
What is Kartik in this calendar?
Damodara month, the month of Kartik, kept as the year's most auspicious period for offering lamps to Damodara, with the Damodarashtakam recited daily. Many devotees take an additional vow for its duration.
