Frequently asked questions about Kannada Calendar

When is the Kannada new year?

Yugadi, on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada - the same tithi as Ugadi and Gudi Padwa, in late March or April. Bevu-bella, neem and jaggery taken together, is the day's characteristic offering.

Which era and month scheme are used?

Shalivahana Shaka with Amanta months, so each lunar month closes at the new moon. The samvatsara name from the sixty-year cycle is announced with the panchanga at Yugadi.

Why neem with the jaggery?

Because the year is taken as it comes - bitter and sweet in the same mouthful. It is one of the plainest festival symbols in the tradition and needs no commentary beyond that.

Which festivals are particular to Karnataka?

Yugadi, Mysore Dasara, Varamahalakshmi Vratam, Naga Panchami, Gowri-Ganesha Habba and Kaarthika Deepotsava. The Kannada Panchanga gives the daily reckoning.

Is it the same calendar as the Telugu one?

Very nearly - both are Shalivahana Shaka with Amanta months, so the tithis and the new year coincide. The festivals and their local observances differ, which is what the two pages set out separately.
