What is the Kolla Varsham?
The Malayalam era, also called Kollam or Kollavarsham, counted from 825 CE, with the year turning on Chingam 1 in mid-August. It is still the reckoning used for temple and traditional purposes in Kerala.
What are the twelve months?
Chingam, Kanni, Thulam, Vrischikam, Dhanu, Makaram, Kumbham, Meenam, Medam, Edavam, Mithunam and Karkidakam - solar months, each starting as the Sun enters the corresponding sidereal sign.
Which days does a Malayali household look for?
Onam in Chingam, Vishu on Medam 1, Thiruvathira, the Mandala Kalam of Sabarimala through Vrischikam and Dhanu, Karkidaka Vavu for the ancestors, and the Ekadashis. The Malayalam calendar lists them by month.
What is Karkidaka Vavu?
The Amavasya of Karkidakam, the chief day of the year for bali tarpanam to the ancestors in Kerala, kept at Thirunavaya, Aluva and the coastal temples. This panchangam marks the Amavasya so the day can be found.
Why does the month start differ from the Tamil almanac?
Because Kerala assigns the month to the day of the ingress if it falls before the end of aparahna, while Tamil Nadu uses sunset as the cutoff. The same solar entry can therefore open the month a day apart.
