Which era does the Marathi Panchang use?
Shaka Samvat, with the year beginning at Gudi Padwa on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, and Amanta months. Shaka years run 78 behind the Common Era.
Why does the month name differ from a Hindi panchang?
Because Maharashtra uses Amanta months and the Hindi belt Purnimanta ones. On the dark fortnight the two label the same day with different month names - the tithi and the festival are identical.
Which days does a Marathi household look for?
Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Ashadhi Ekadashi, Nag Panchami, Ganesh Chaturthi and the Anant Chaturdashi that ends it, Mangala Gaur, Vat Purnima, Kojagiri Purnima and each Sankashti Chaturthi. The Marathi calendar lists them by month.
What is an Angarki Chaturthi?
A Sankashti Chaturthi that falls on a Tuesday, kept in very large numbers in Maharashtra. Because both Mangal and Ganesha are honoured on it, the day is thought to carry the fast\'s benefit doubly. See the Sankashti calendar.
Why does an extra month appear in some years?
Adhik Maas - the intercalary lunar month inserted about every third year to keep the lunar and solar reckonings together. Festivals in that month shift to the Nija (true) month, and no auspicious work is begun in the Adhik one.
