Which reckoning does the Odia Panji use?
Odia solar months - Baisakha through Chaitra - with the Shaka year, each month beginning on the day of the Sankranti itself under the Odia same-day rule.
What is the Vilayati Sal?
The revenue era of Odisha, whose year turns at Kanya Sankranti in mid-September. Odia almanacs print it alongside the Shaka year, which is why the two roll over at different points.
Which days does an Odia household look for?
The Rath Yatra sequence at Puri with Snana Purnima and Niladri Bije, Pana Sankranti, Raja Parba, the Manabasa Gurubara Thursdays of Margasira, Kartika Purnima with Boita Bandana, Prathamastami and Kumar Purnima. The Odia calendar lists them by month.
What is Manabasa Gurubara?
The Thursdays of the month of Margasira, on which Maa Lakshmi is worshipped in Odia homes with the Lakshmi Purana read aloud. The Panji marks each of them, since there are four or five depending on the year.
Why does the month begin a day before a Bengali panjika?
Because Odisha starts the month on the day of the ingress while Bengal starts it the day after. Same Sankranti, different convention - both almanacs are internally correct.
