Frequently asked questions about Odia Calendar

What is the Vilayati Sal?

The revenue era used in Odisha, whose year rolls over at Kanya Sankranti in mid-September - which is why the Odia calendar shows a year change in autumn rather than in spring.

When is the Odia new year?

Pana Sankranti, the Maha Vishuva Sankranti in mid-April, when the Sun enters Mesha - kept with the sweet pana drink and the Basundhara Theki. It is the festival new year, while the Vilayati Sal number changes in September.

What are the Odia months?

Baisakha, Jyestha, Ashadha, Shrabana, Bhadraba, Aswina, Kartika, Margasira, Pausa, Magha, Phalguna, Chaitra - solar months beginning on the day of the Sankranti itself, under the same-day rule.

Which festivals are particular to Odisha?

Rath Yatra at Puri above all, with Snana Purnima and Niladri Bije around it; then Raja Parba, Kartika Purnima with Boita Bandana, Manabasa Gurubara in Margasira and Prathamastami. The Odia Panji gives the daily almanac.

Why does the page show two years?

Because the Vilayati Sal is the local reckoning and the Shaka Samvat the pan-Indian one, and Odia almanacs print both. They roll over at different points in the year, so for part of it the pairing looks unfamiliar.
