Frequently asked questions about Pradosh

What is Pradosh Vrat?

The Shiva fast kept on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi, in both fortnights - so twice a month. The worship falls in pradosh kaal, the twilight window of roughly ninety minutes after sunset.

Why does the weekday matter so much?

Because each weekday gives the Pradosh its own character and fruit - Soma Pradosh on Monday, Bhauma on Tuesday, Shani on Saturday being the most sought. Shani Pradosh in particular is kept by those under Saturn's periods.

How is the fast kept?

A day fast, the abhishek and puja in the twilight window, then a single meal. The Pradosh Vrat Katha is read and the Shiva aarti sung to close.

What if Trayodashi does not cover the twilight hour?

Then the vrat moves to the day on which the tithi is current at pradosh kaal - which is why the date can differ from the day the tithi begins. The calendar gives the tithi timing so this is visible.

Is it different from Masik Shivaratri?

Yes. Pradosh is on Trayodashi at twilight; Masik Shivaratri is on the dark-fortnight Chaturdashi at midnight. Devotees often keep both, a day apart.
