Frequently asked questions about Punjabi Calendar
What is a Sangrand?
The first day of the Punjabi solar month, when the Sun enters a new sign - marked in gurdwaras with the reading of the Barah Maha. The months are Chet, Vaisakh, Jeth, Harh, Sawan, Bhadon, Assu, Katak, Maghar, Poh, Magh and Phagan.
What is the Nanakshahi era?
The Sikh era counted from 1469, the year of Guru Nanak's birth, with the year beginning on 1 Chet in mid-March. The older Bikrami reckoning is still used alongside it, and almanacs print both.
When is Vaisakhi?
On 1 Vaisakh, around 13 or 14 April - the harvest festival and the day the Khalsa was founded in 1699. It falls at the Mesha Sankranti, so it sits alongside Puthandu, Pohela Boishakh and Bohag Bihu.
Which other days does the calendar mark?
The Gurpurabs - the birth and martyrdom days of the Gurus - Lohri, Maghi, Bandi Chhor Divas at Diwali and Hola Mohalla. The Punjabi Jantri gives the day-by-day almanac.
Why do some Gurpurab dates move?
Because the Nanakshahi calendar fixed several to solar dates while others are still kept by the Bikrami lunar reckoning, and different jathebandis follow different conventions. Where your gurdwara keeps another date, follow it.
