Frequently asked questions about Shri Satyanarayan Puja Vrat Calendar
When is the Satyanarayan puja done?
Purnima is the favoured day, and Thursday after it - but once a sankalpa is made the puja may be held on any auspicious day, which is why it is so often done for a new house, a new business or a wish fulfilled.
What does the observance involve?
A light fast till evening, the puja, the five chapters of the katha, the sava-measure sheera or panjiri offering, then the aarti and prasad. The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha page has the full text.
Why is the prasad so emphasised?
Because the katha turns on it - the merchant family that neglected the prasad lost everything. Everyone present must take it, nothing is kept back, and the sava measure is sized so that all can share.
What is a sava measure?
One and a quarter of whatever unit is used - a sava kilo or a sava pav of wheat flour, sugar, ghee and banana in equal measure. The quarter over the whole is the mark of the vrat.
Can it be done without a priest?
Yes, and most households do it themselves - the katha reading and the offering are the substance. A priest is engaged for a larger gathering or where a havan is added.
