When is the Sindhi new year?
Cheti Chand - Chaitra Shukla Dwitiya, the second tithi of the first lunar month - kept as the birth day of Jhulelal, the community's patron deity, and as the start of the Sindhi year.
Who is Jhulelal?
The Sindhi Hindu form of Varuna, the water deity, revered as Uderolal and Amarlal, whose appearance the community celebrates at Cheti Chand with the Behrana Sahib procession to the water.
Which observances are particular to the Sindhi calendar?
Cheti Chand, Thadri, and the Chaliho Sahib - the forty-day austerity kept in Jyeshtha and Ashadh - alongside the general Hindu festivals. The Sindhi tradition also keeps a strong Guru Granth and Puj reading practice.
