When is the Telugu new year?
Ugadi, on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada - the first tithi of the first lunar month, in late March or April. Ugadi pachadi with its six tastes is the day's characteristic offering.
Which era and month scheme are used?
The Shalivahana Shaka Samvat with Amanta months, so each lunar month ends at the new moon. Shaka years run 78 behind the Common Era.
What is the samvatsara named at Ugadi?
The year's name in the sixty-year Jovian cycle - Prabhava through Akshaya - read out with the panchanga sravanam on Ugadi morning, along with the year's forecast for each rashi.
Which festivals are particular to it?
Ugadi, Sri Rama Navami with the Bhadrachalam kalyanam, Varalakshmi Vratam, Bathukamma and Bonalu in Telangana, Atla Tadde and Sankranti kept over three days. The Telugu Panchangam gives the daily view.
Why does the Telugu date differ from a north Indian almanac?
Chiefly the Amanta and Purnimanta split: the dark fortnight carries a different month name in the north, so festivals in Krishna Paksha appear under another month even though the tithi is the same day.
