What is the Bangabda?
The Bengali era, the San year, counted from 593 or 594 behind the Common Era depending on where in the year you are - the count rolls over in mid-April at Pohela Boishakh.
When is the Bengali new year?
Pohela Boishakh, around 14 or 15 April, when the Sun enters Mesha. Businesses open the Haal Khata, the new ledger, on that day.
What are the Bengali months?
Boishakh, Joishtho, Asharh, Shrabon, Bhadro, Ashshin, Kartik, Ogrohayon, Poush, Magh, Falgun, Choitro - solar months, each beginning at a Sankranti.
Why does the Bengali month start a day after the Sankranti?
Because the Bengali rule assigns the month to the day after the ingress, unlike the Tamil sunset rule or the Odia same-day rule. That is a genuine difference of convention, not an error in either almanac.
Which festivals does it centre on?
Durga Puja above all, then Kali Puja, Lakshmi Puja at Kojagari Purnima, Saraswati Puja at Vasant Panchami, Jamai Shashthi, Rath Yatra and Poush Parbon. The Bengali Panjika gives the daily reckoning and the Durga Puja calendar the puja days.
