Choghadiya Today - frequently asked questions

What is Choghadiya?

A quick electional timing system, popular in western India, from chau-ghadi meaning four ghadis. The day and the night are each divided into eight equal windows, giving sixteen muhurats, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets.

Which windows are good and which are not?

Amrit is the most auspicious, followed by Shubh for ceremonies and Labh for business and money. Char is neutral and suits travel and movement. Rog, Kaal and Udveg are the inauspicious three, best avoided for new beginnings.

Are Rog, Kaal and Udveg completely unusable?

Not completely - the tradition gives each a narrow use. Kaal is used for wealth matters and iron work, and Udveg suits government and official business. What they are unsuited to is starting something auspicious. Ordinary daily activity continues through them.

Why do the timings change with my city?

Because each window is one-eighth of the local daylight or night, so its length depends on your sunrise and sunset. Choghadiya from another city will not match yours, sometimes by a considerable margin. Set the location before using the schedule.

How does it compare with Hora?

They are parallel systems and many people check both. Hora divides the day into twelve planetary hours; Choghadiya into eight named windows. Where a good hora and a good choghadiya overlap, the timing is considered particularly favourable.

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya, from "chau-ghadi" (four ghadis), is a quick electional timing system, popular in western India, for selecting auspicious moments for daily tasks. The day (sunrise to sunset) and night (sunset to next sunrise) are each divided into 8 equal choghadiya windows, totaling 16 muhurats, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets.

  • Amrit (Moon): Most auspicious; good for all important work, ceremonies, medicine.
  • Shubh (Jupiter): Auspicious; marriage, religious rites, housewarming, new ventures.
  • Labh (Mercury): Gain; business, trade, education, money matters.
  • Char (Venus): Neutral, movable; ideal for travel, vehicles, movement.
  • Rog (Mars): Inauspicious; avoid health matters, new starts due to illness, conflict.
  • Kaal (Saturn): Inauspicious; avoid beginnings, though used for wealth, iron work.
  • Udveg (Sun): Inauspicious; anxiety; suited only to government, official work.

Choghadiya times vary by location because each window is one-eighth of the local daylight or night length. The first day choghadiya is always ruled by the weekday lord, followed by a fixed planetary cycle. This calculator uses your local sunrise and sunset; changing the city updates the choghadiya.
