What is Gowri Panchang?
The South Indian daily almanac, also called Gowri Panchangam or Nalla Neram. Daylight and night are each split into eight equal parts named Uthi, Amirdha, Rogam, Laabam, Dhanam, Sugam, Soram and Visham. Five of those are auspicious hours for starting work; three are set aside. This page also lists the day's tithi, nakshatra and South Indian festivals with the Tamil solar month.
Which Gowri periods are Nalla Neram?
Uthi, Amirdha, Laabam, Dhanam and Sugam. Amirdha is the strongest of the five. Rogam, Soram and Visham are avoided for new work, travel and ceremonies. Tap any day on the grid for the clock times of all eight windows, day and night.
Does the Gowri clock change by city?
Yes. The eight parts are equal slices of local sunrise to sunset, and of sunset to the next sunrise, so Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru do not share the same clock. Set your city in the location bar; the windows recompute for that sunrise.
How is this different from the Tamil Panchangam or Choghadiya?
The Tamil Panchangam is the same Tamil solar year of tithi, nakshatra and festivals, without the Gowri tables. Choghadiya, on Choghadiya Today, is the North Indian eight-fold day used in the Hindi belt. Gowri Panchang is the South Indian table from the Pambu Panchangam. The names and the weekday start differ even though both split the day into eight.
Can I fix a wedding or housewarming muhurat from Gowri alone?
It will tell you which hours of a chosen day are Nalla Neram, not whether that date is fit for the rite. For a dated muhurat list use the muhurat pages, and confirm an important ceremony with a qualified astrologer. Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam and Gulika still sit on the daily Panchang.
