Frequently asked questions about Gujarati Samvat Calendar
When does the Gujarati year begin?
On Bestu Varas, the Kartika Shukla Pratipada immediately after Diwali. Gujarat keeps the Vikram Samvat but rolls it over at Kartika rather than at Chaitra, which is why its Samvat number differs from the north's for part of the year.
Which month scheme does it use?
Amanta - each lunar month ends at the new moon, as in the south and west. So Kartika begins the year and Ashwin closes it.
Which festivals are particular to it?
Bestu Varas and the Diwali sequence with Sharda Pujan of the account books, Uttarayan at Makar Sankranti, and Navratri kept as nine nights of garba. The Gujarati Panchang gives the day-by-day view.
What is Sharda Pujan?
The worship of the account books on the Diwali night - new books opened with the shubh-labh mark and Saraswati and Lakshmi invoked together, since the year's trading begins the next morning. It is the Gujarati business new year.
Is the Gujarati Samvat the same as the Vikram Samvat?
Same era, different start. The number is the Vikram Samvat; only the point at which it increments differs, so for the Chaitra-to-Kartika stretch the Gujarati figure runs one behind the north Indian one.
