Frequently asked questions about Marathi Calendar
When is the Marathi new year?
Gudi Padwa, on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, when the gudi is raised at the doorway with a bamboo pole, a bright cloth, neem leaves, a garland and an inverted pot. It is one of the three-and-a-half auspicious muhurats of the Marathi year.
What are the three and a half muhurats?
Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya, Dussehra and the half at Balipratipada - days on which no separate muhurat is needed to begin something. It is a distinctly Maharashtrian reckoning.
Which era and month scheme are used?
Shaka Samvat with Amanta months. So Chaitra opens the year and the dark fortnight carries the same month name as the bright one preceding it, unlike the north's Purnimanta reckoning.
Which festivals are particular to Maharashtra?
Ganeshotsav above all, then Gudi Padwa, Ashadhi Ekadashi with the Pandharpur wari, Nag Panchami, Mangala Gaur, Vat Purnima and Kojagiri Purnima. The Marathi Panchang gives the daily view.
What is Angarki Chaturthi in this calendar?
Sankashti Chaturthi falling on a Tuesday, kept in very large numbers in Maharashtra - the Sankashti calendar marks each occurrence.
