What is Bikram Sambat?
The official calendar of Nepal - the Vikram Samvat, running about 56 or 57 years ahead of the Common Era, with solar months beginning at the Sankrantis. Government and civil dates in Nepal are stated in it.
When does the Nepali year begin?
On Baishakh 1, in mid-April, at the Mesha Sankranti - Nepali New Year, a public holiday. The months run Baishakh, Jestha, Ashadh, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun, Chaitra.
Why do Nepali month lengths vary so much?
Because they follow the Sun's actual passage through each sidereal sign, which takes between twenty-nine and thirty-two days. That is why a Bikram Sambat month cannot be converted to a Gregorian one by a fixed rule.
Which festivals does the calendar centre on?
Dashain and Tihar above all, then Teej, Janai Purnima, Gai Jatra, Indra Jatra, Maghe Sankranti and Buddha Jayanti. Several are national holidays in Nepal.
Is the Nepal Sambat the same thing?
No. Nepal Sambat is the older Newar era, counted from 879 CE and rolling over at Mha Puja during Tihar. This page uses Bikram Sambat, which is the official reckoning. It is still a yearly calendar; today's tithi and sunrise are on the Panchang, and the other regional almanacs, including the Hindu calendar, sit on Calendars.
