What is Sahasra Chandra Darshan?

Sahasra Chandra Darshan (Sanskrit: सहस्र चन्द्र दर्शन, "seeing a thousand moons"), also called Shatabhishekam or Sahasra Purna Chandrodayam, is the Hindu celebration of a person witnessing their 1000th full moon. Because one full-moon to full-moon (synodic) month averages 29.53 days, 1000 full moons span roughly 80 years and 10 months — so the ceremony falls in a person's 81st year.

How this calculator works

  • It finds the first full moon after the date of birth, then the exact date of the 1000th full moon (Sun–Moon opposition) using the Lahiri sidereal ephemeris.
  • It shows the age on that day and the tithi, lunar month and nakshatra of that Purnima.

The milestone is computed astronomically rather than by a fixed age, so it accounts for the extra lunar months (Adhik Maas) that occur over a lifetime. Families usually hold the Shatabhishekam ceremony on an auspicious day around this date.
