Ashtakavarga assigns benefic points, called bindus, from each of the seven grahas to the twelve signs. The Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) is the sum across all seven planets, giving each sign a score, with 337 bindus in total. Signs and houses with more bindus are traditionally considered stronger and more supportive.

Vedic astrology groups the twelve signs into four elements (triplicities), and each element maps to a cardinal direction: East for fiery signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), South for earthy signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), West for airy signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and North for watery signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).
