Why is my Vedic Sun sign one behind my usual one?
Because of the ayanamsa. The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology starts at the spring equinox, while the sidereal zodiac used here is fixed to the stars. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so most people born in the first three weeks of a Western sign fall into the previous sign sidereally.
Does the Sun sign matter much in Vedic astrology?
It matters, but less than in Western practice. The Sun carries the soul, vitality, confidence, authority and the father, and its house and dignity are read carefully. What it does not do is anchor the system - that role belongs to the Moon sign and the ascendant, which is why Indian predictions are written for the Rashi rather than the Sun sign.
How precise does my birth time need to be?
Barely at all for the sign itself, since the Sun stays in one sign for about a month. Only a birth within a day of a Sankranti, the Sun's ingress into the next sign, needs care. The Sun's Nakshatra and the Panchang details shown alongside do respond to time, so enter the best you have.
What is the connection between Surya Rashi and Sankranti?
Sankranti is the moment the Sun enters a new sidereal sign, and it marks the boundary between one Surya Rashi and the next. Makar Sankranti, the Sun's entry into Capricorn, is the best known. Which of my three signs should I actually go by?
All three, for different things. Use the Moon sign for daily predictions and matching, the ascendant for reading the chart's houses, and the Sun sign for questions of vitality, authority and your relationship with your father. Trying to reduce a chart to one sign is what makes sign-based astrology feel so hit-and-miss.
What is Surya Rashi (Sun Sign)?
Your Surya Rashi is the Vedic Sun sign - the sidereal zodiac sign the Sun occupied at birth, computed with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Because it is sidereal, it often differs from the Western tropical Sun sign by about one sign. In Jyotish the Sun is the karaka of the soul, vitality, confidence, authority and the father. The sign it occupies colours how those themes show in the chart, but it is not the whole person: Lagna and the Moon usually describe body and mind more closely.
