What the ascendant is
The ascendant (Lagna) is the exact zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. Because the Earth rotates once every 24 hours, the rising sign changes roughly every two hours - which is why your precise birth time is essential. The ascendant becomes your 1st house, and from it every other house is counted around the chart.
Why it is so important
Your Moon sign describes your mind and your Sun sign your soul, but the ascendant fixes the whole framework: it decides which sign falls in each house, and therefore which planet rules each area of your life. Two people born on the same day with different ascendants will have completely different charts, because the same planets land in different houses for each of them. The ascendant governs your body, health, vitality, temperament and the overall direction your life takes.
The Lagna lord

- A Lagna lord in a dusthana (6, 8, 12), or debilitated or combust, can bring struggles with health, confidence or direction until it strengthens by Dasha or transit.

What each rising sign broadly means
Each of the twelve ascendants gives a recognisable stamp - Aries rising is direct and pioneering, Taurus steady and comfort-seeking, Gemini curious and communicative, Cancer nurturing and sensitive, Leo confident and proud, Virgo precise and service-minded, Libra diplomatic and relationship-focused, Scorpio intense and private, Sagittarius optimistic and philosophical, Capricorn disciplined and ambitious, Aquarius independent and unconventional, and Pisces gentle and imaginative. These are starting flavours; the Lagna lord's placement and any planets in the 1st house modify them substantially.
