Gulika — also called Maandi — is the most important of the upagrahas, the shadow points of Vedic astrology. It is the offspring of Saturn: a mathematical point, not a physical body, that carries Saturn's themes of delay, fear, restriction and stored karma into whichever house and rashi it occupies. Classical texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra treat Gulika's placement as a key test of a chart, and in Kerala tradition Maandi is examined in every horoscope.

How Gulika is calculated

The day (sunrise to sunset, for daytime births) or the night (sunset to the next sunrise) is divided into eight equal parts. The parts are ruled in weekday order — for a day birth the first part belongs to the day's lord, while for a night birth the sequence starts from the lord of the 5th weekday counted from the day's lord; the eighth part is lordless. Saturn's portion is the Gulika Kala, and the sidereal ascendant (Lahiri ayanamsa) rising at the start of Saturn's portion is Gulika's longitude — the common Drik/Parashara convention used by this calculator. Some schools instead take the middle or end of the portion for Maandi, so small differences between sources are normal.
