The answer is that both can be correct, because they measure different things in different ways. Two zodiacs, not one
The root of the difference is that Western and Vedic astrology use two different zodiacs:
- Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. It fixes 0° Aries to the spring equinox, regardless of where the constellations actually are.
- Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the actual, observable stars. It tracks the constellations as they really sit in the sky.
Because of a slow wobble in Earth's axis called the precession of the equinoxes, the two zodiacs have drifted apart over the centuries. Today the gap - called the ayanamsa - is about 24°. Vedic astrology corrects for this using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, so its signs align with the visible stars. This roughly 24° shift is why a late-sign Western placement often falls into the previous sign in the Vedic system.
Sun sign vs Moon sign
There is a second, equally important difference. When Westerners say "my sign," they almost always mean their Sun sign - the sign the Sun occupied at birth. Vedic astrology, by contrast, gives pride of place to the Moon sign, called the Janma Rashi. Why the Moon? In the Vedic view the Moon represents the mind and emotions - the lens through which you actually experience life day to day - and it moves quickly, changing signs every 2.25 days, so it captures something very specific about the moment of birth. The Sun, moving about one degree a day, describes the soul and ego but changes sign only monthly.
So which sign are you, really?
You are, in fact, several signs at once, and each answers a different question:

- Your Vedic ascendant (Lagna) - your outward personality and life direction.

None of these is "wrong." They are complementary readings from two valid systems. Confusion only arises when people compare a Western Sun sign to a Vedic Moon sign and expect them to match - they are measuring different bodies in different zodiacs.
An example
Suppose you were born with the Sun at 3° of tropical Leo. Subtract the ayanamsa of about 24° and, in the sidereal zodiac, the Sun falls near 9° of Cancer (Karka). So Western astrology calls you a Leo Sun, while your Vedic Sun sign is Cancer.
