How are gemstones chosen in Vedic astrology?

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), gemstones (Ratna) are worn to strengthen a planet and the part of life it governs. The safest, most classical method is based on your Lagna (ascendant) rather than just your Sun or Moon sign.

The lords of the three trine houses — the 1st (self and vitality), 5th (intellect, creativity and fortune) and 9th (luck, dharma and blessings) — are always benefic for a chart. Their gemstones become your life, lucky and fortune stones. Gems linked to the difficult 6th, 8th and 12th house lords are best avoided unless an astrologer confirms them.
