Gemstone Carat Calculator

Gemstone Carat

Enter body weight to get the minimum carats for a Vedic Ratna. The rule is 1 carat per 12 kg, with a higher floor for Coral and Hessonite and half-weight for Diamond. It does not replace Gemstone Suggestions for which stone the Lagna supports.

Enter your weight, pick a stone (or keep general), then tap Find minimum carats.

Frequently asked questions about Gemstone Carat

How is the minimum carat weight calculated?

From body weight: 1 carat per 12 kg, then rounded up to the next tenth. That is the working Jyotish rule already quoted on this site. A 60 kg person therefore starts at 5 carats. The number is a floor for a natural untreated stone, not a shopping target.

How is this different from Gemstone Suggestions?

Gemstone Suggestions names which Ratna the Lagna trines support. This page only sizes the stone from body weight. Use that calculator to choose, this one for how heavy it should be, and Best Day to Wear Gemstone for when to put it on.

Does a bigger stone work better?

No. Tradition cares that the gem meets a usable weight and touches the skin; it does not treat extra carats as extra result. A clean 4 ct stone is preferred to a cloudy or treated 8 ct one. Going far above the floor is a jewellery choice, not a Jyotish requirement.

Why is Diamond smaller, and Coral larger?

Diamond (Heera) is taken at half the body-weight figure, with a 0.5-carat floor, because a full-weight diamond is rarely prescribed. Red Coral and Hessonite are worn larger, so they will not drop below 5 carats even when weight ÷ 12 is smaller. The other stones use 1/12 with a 2- or 3-carat floor.

What is the difference between carats and ratti?

A metric carat is 0.2 g. Indian jewellery often still quotes ratti. This page uses the gem-trade ratti of 0.91 ct, not the older 121.5 mg seed ratti, so the two units can be compared on a shop ticket. The primary number is always carats.

What if I cannot afford the minimum weight?

Use the listed Upratna at a similar size, or skip the gem. A Jadi (tree-root amulet) is the plant form of the same planet. Mantra, daan and vrat on Kundli Remedy are the usual path when a stone is out of reach, and Vedic crystal suggestions are gentler still. No classical text says a remedy has to be expensive.

About Gemstone Carat

Jyotish sizes a Ratna from the wearer's body, not from a jewellery catalogue. The working rule on this site is 1 carat per 12 kg of body weight - the same figure already given on Gemstone Suggestions. A 60 kg person therefore starts at 5 carats. The number is a floor: a clean untreated stone at that weight is preferred to a larger, treated one.

Two stones sit off that line. Diamond (Heera) is taken at half the body-weight figure, with a 0.5-carat floor, because a full-weight diamond is rarely prescribed. Red Coral and Hessonite are worn larger, so they will not drop below 5 carats even when the formula is smaller. Ruby, Pearl, Emerald, Yellow Sapphire, Blue Sapphire and Cat's Eye use 1/12 with their own traditional floors (2 or 3 carats). Jewellery ratti here is 0.91 ct, the gem-trade conversion, not the 121.5 mg seed ratti.

This page does not choose the stone. That is Gemstone Suggestions from the Lagna trines. Gentler options are Vedic crystal suggestions. The weekday and Hora to start wearing live on Best Day to Wear Gemstone. Mantra, daan and vrat when a gem is not advised are on Kundli Remedy. Enter weight only - no birth time is required.
