What is Janma Vara?
Your Janma Vara is the weekday — the vara — on which you were born, counted the Vedic way. The vara is the fifth of the five limbs of the Panchang, and unlike the modern calendar day that flips at midnight, the Vedic day runs from one sunrise to the next. A birth at 3 AM on a calendar Tuesday therefore belongs to Somavara (Monday), because the Tuesday Sun had not yet risen. This calculator applies that sunrise rule automatically using the sunrise at your exact birthplace.
Each vara is ruled by one of the seven classical grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — and the day lord stamps its temperament on those born under it. The varas also carry a muhurta nature: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are counted gentle (saumya), while Sunday, Tuesday, and Saturday are sharp (krura) days suited to bold rather than delicate undertakings. Each day likewise has its worshipped deities, gemstone, and colours.

- The classical lucky gem and colours of your birth day
- Sunrise time at your birthplace, and whether the vara differs from the calendar day

For an accurate result, enter your exact time of birth and select your birth city from the dropdown so the coordinates and timezone are correct — for births within a couple of hours of dawn, the sunrise rule can change the answer entirely.
