What is a karmic debt (Rina) in Vedic astrology?
In Vedic astrology a karmic debt — Rina — is an unpaid obligation carried into this life from the past. It is read from the planetary placements in your sidereal birth chart, above all from the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, which form the karmic axis: Ketu holds the debts and unfinished business of past lives, while Rahu points to the direction of growth this time around.
How the debts are read
When a planet is conjunct or aspected by Rahu or Ketu, the matters that planet governs carry a specific debt:
- Sun → Pitru Rina — father and ancestors
- Moon → Matru Rina — mother and emotional karma
- Mars → Bhratru Rina — siblings, courage and land
- Mercury → Jnati Rina — relatives, friends and speech
- Jupiter → Deva / Guru Rina — teachers, dharma and deities
- Venus → Stri Rina — spouse, partners and women
- Saturn → Sevak / Preta Rina — service, labour and the departed
What you get
The indicator shows your Ketu house (the past-life debt area), your Rahu house (where to grow), each karmic debt that is active with its strength and the exact placement behind it, and the remedies traditionally used to clear it — from Tarpan and daan to selfless service. Karmic debts are considered very workable: the right giving and inner change lighten them over time.
