What is the Mithila Panchang?
The almanac of the Maithil region of north Bihar and the Nepal Terai, using the Lakshmana Samvat - La. Sam. - and Purnimanta months, so each lunar month ends at the full moon.
What is the Lakshmana Samvat?
The Maithil era counted from the accession of Lakshmana Sena in the late twelfth century, some 1119 or 1120 years behind the Common Era. Maithil panjis have kept it alongside the Shaka and Vikram years.
When is the Maithil new year?
Jur Sital, at the Mesha Sankranti in mid-April, kept with the sprinkling of water on elders and the household - the Maithil counterpart of Pohela Boishakh and Bohag Bihu on the same ingress.
Which festivals are particular to Mithila?
Chhath Puja above all, then Jitiya or Jivitputrika, Madhushravani, Sama Chakeva in Kartik, Vivah Panchami at Janakpur and Jur Sital. The Chhath katha covers the greatest of them.
Why does the month name differ from a Bengali almanac?
Because Mithila uses Purnimanta lunar months while Bengal uses solar months tied to the Sankrantis. The tithis are the same; the month label and its boundaries are computed on different principles.
