What is Shubha Muhurat?

Shubha Muhurat means an "auspicious moment" — a window of time chosen from the Panchang to begin an important task so it unfolds smoothly. Each day carries a handful of naturally favourable windows and a few that are best avoided, and because they are tied to your local sunrise and sunset, the exact timings differ from one city to another and shift through the year.

The auspicious windows

  • Abhijit Muhurat — the 8th of the fifteen day-muhurtas, centred on solar noon. The most reliable daily muhurat: when nothing else is available, Abhijit is favourable for almost any new beginning.
  • Brahma Muhurat — the pre-dawn window about 1½ hours before sunrise, prized for meditation, prayer, study and waking.
  • Amrit Kaal — a "nectar" window derived from the day's Nakshatra, considered highly auspicious for important work.
  • Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga — an "all-accomplishing" combination of weekday and Nakshatra that favours most undertakings (present only on qualifying days).

The windows to avoid

  • Rahu Kalam — the daily Rahu period; avoid starting auspicious or important work.
  • Yamaganda and Gulika Kalam — further inauspicious eighths of the day, avoided for new beginnings.
  • Dur Muhurtam and Varjyam — short inauspicious windows; postpone important starts past them.
