Gandmool Nakshatra Dosha

Your chart is saved automatically.

Enter birth date, time, and place. Gandmool Dosha is read from your Janma Nakshatra (the Moon's birth star, sidereal/Lahiri) - it applies only if the Moon is in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati.

Use the exact birth time - the Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day, so the pada depends on it.

Frequently asked questions about Gandmool Nakshatra Dosha

Which are the six Gandmool nakshatras?

Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati. Three are ruled by Ketu and three by Mercury, and they sit at the junctions where a water sign meets a fire sign - Pisces into Aries, Cancer into Leo, and Scorpio into Sagittarius. That junction, or gand, is what the name refers to.

How serious is a Gandmool birth?

Much less than it sounds. Six of 27 stars means around a fifth of all births qualify, and the tradition responds with a single Shanti puja rather than any lasting concern. Many highly accomplished and spiritual people are born in these stars, and Revati and Ashwini in particular are otherwise considered very fortunate.

Does the pada change how strong it is?

Yes, and this is the part most often left out. The pada touching the exact sign junction is the sensitive one; the other padas are considerably milder, and some texts do not count them at all. So a Gandmool birth in a distant pada is a very light reading indeed.

When should the Shanti puja be performed?

Traditionally when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra, which falls around the 27th day after birth - this calculator works out that date. If it was not done then, any later recurrence of the same star is acceptable, including in adulthood. It is a short observance, not an elaborate ceremony.

Is this the same as Gandanta?

They overlap but are not identical. Gandanta refers specifically to the few degrees on either side of the water-fire junction, and applies to the Moon, the Lagna or the tithi. Gandmool counts the whole nakshatra. The Gandanta checker looks at the tighter degree-based condition.

What is Gandmool Nakshatra Dosha?

Gandmool Dosha applies when the birth Moon falls in one of six gandanta nakshatras: Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati. Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha and Mula; Mercury rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati. They sit at the water-fire junctions (Pisces-Aries, Cancer-Leo, Scorpio-Sagittarius). Strength depends on the pada that touches the sign knot.

Tradition links these births with a tender early period, and treats the dosha as remediable by Gandmool Shanti Puja when the Moon returns to the same star - often around the 27th day, which this page computes. Many capable people are born in these stars. Exact time and city keep the pada right.
