What does the Gnatikaraka cover?
A cluster of sixth-house themes: cousins and extended kin, rivals and opponents, obstacles, litigation and illness - and, in the same breath, the capacity for spiritual discipline. The tradition pairs struggle with sadhana deliberately, on the view that one develops the other.
Is it a negative karaka?
Not in the way it sounds. It marks the arena where resistance shows up, and Jaimini treats resistance as the engine of discipline rather than as misfortune. A strong Gnatikaraka is frequently found in the charts of people who train hard, compete well or sustain a serious spiritual practice.
How is it identified?
It is the planet immediately above the Darakaraka in the degree order - the second-lowest degree among the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. That makes it sensitive to small shifts in the birth time, since two planets close in degree can swap the Gnatikaraka and Darakaraka roles.
What should I actually do with this reading?
Use it to recognise a pattern. If your Gnatikaraka is Saturn, obstacles tend to arrive as delay and workload; if Mars, as open conflict; if Mercury, as disputes over words and paperwork. Knowing the flavour of your habitual resistance is more useful than trying to remove it.
How does it relate to the 6th house?
They overlap but are not the same thing. The 6th house is a fixed part of your chart; the Gnatikaraka is a movable significator whose identity depends on degrees. What is the Gnatikaraka?
The Gnatikaraka (GK) is one of the Jaimini Chara Karakas. Among the seven planets from Sun to Saturn, it is the karaka just above the Darakaraka - the planet that has advanced a little more than the lowest-degree planet. This calculator uses the seven-karaka (Parashari) scheme, so Rahu and Ketu are not counted. Classically it signifies cousins and kin (gnati), rivals, obstacles, litigation, disease, and the capacity for spiritual discipline (sadhana).
That list is a set of themes, not a diagnosis. A Gnatikaraka does not mean you will fall ill or lose a court case. Health belongs to a doctor; legal disputes belong to a lawyer. The planet, its sign and house hint at the flavour of struggle and of inner work, which still has to be read with the 6th house, its lord, and the dasha in force. Some charts show the same planet as a tough karaka and as a strong yogakaraka from Lagna - both can be true.
