Frequently asked questions about Atmakaraka

How is the Atmakaraka decided?

By degrees alone. Whichever of the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn has travelled furthest into its sign - the highest degree, regardless of which sign - becomes the Atmakaraka. It has nothing to do with strength, dignity or house placement, which is why a debilitated planet can hold the office.

Why are Rahu and Ketu excluded?

Because this calculator follows the seven-karaka Parashari scheme. There is a variant eight-karaka scheme that includes Rahu, counted in reverse since it moves backwards, and that can change several karaka assignments. Both are in use; results differ between astrologers largely because of this choice.

What does the Atmakaraka signify?

The soul's central agenda for this life - the deepest desire and the main lesson. Jaimini treats it as the most important planet in the chart, and its condition is read closely. A difficult Atmakaraka is not a bad sign; the tradition holds that the soul deliberately took on that planet's lesson. The Navamsha sign of that planet is the Swamsha - see the Swamsha calculator - and the same sign is the lagna of the Karakamsha Chart.

What are the other Chara Karakas for?

They fill out the cast of a life in descending order of degrees: Amatyakaraka for mind and career, Bhratrikaraka for siblings and gurus, Matrikaraka for mother, Putrakaraka for children, Gnatikaraka for rivals and sadhana, and Darakaraka for the spouse. They are read alongside the house significations, not instead of them. The Chara Karaka calculator gives every office equal space and compares the eight-karaka scheme.

How much does birth time affect this?

Less than you might expect for the slower planets, but the Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so it can overtake or fall behind another planet within a single day. Since the whole scheme is an ordering by degree, one swap reshuffles several karakas. An accurate time is worth having.

What is the Atmakaraka?

The Atmakaraka ("significator of the soul") is the most important planet in Jaimini astrology. Among the seven planets from Sun to Saturn, the one that has advanced the furthest within its sign (the highest degrees) becomes the Atmakaraka. This calculator uses the seven-karaka (Parashari) scheme, so Rahu and Ketu are not counted. It represents the soul's central lesson and desire for the lifetime - a significator, not a personality test and not a guarantee of spiritual attainment.

The remaining planets take the other Chara Karaka roles in descending order of degrees: Amatyakaraka (career and counsel), Bhratrikaraka (siblings and gurus), Matrikaraka (mother, emotions, property), Putrakaraka (children and intellect), Gnatikaraka (rivals and obstacles), and Darakaraka (spouse). Some schools include Rahu as an eighth karaka; this page does not, so a chart computed elsewhere with Rahu may rank the list differently.

Because the Moon and other fast planets shift quickly, enter the exact birth time and pick the city from the suggestions. For every office on one page, including the eight-karaka comparison, use the Chara Karaka calculator. For the spouse karaka at the other end of the ranking, use Darakaraka. For rivals and sadhana, use Gnatikaraka. The full natal chart is in Kundli Maker. Karakamsha and Jaimini raja yogas need the Navamsa as well; this tool names the karakas from the rasi chart degrees.
