Why is the lowest-degree planet the spouse indicator?

It is the convention of the Jaimini scheme: the karakas are assigned in descending order of degrees, and the last place in that queue falls to the Darakaraka. The reasoning offered by commentators is that the spouse is the karaka most separate from the self, which sits at the top of the same list.

Does the Darakaraka describe who I will marry?

It describes qualities and temperament rather than a person. A Saturn Darakaraka points to someone steady, older in manner or serious; a Venus one to someone refined and sociable. Read it as a set of traits your partner is likely to carry, not as a portrait, and certainly not as a way to identify someone in advance.

What if it contradicts my 7th house?

Then read both and give weight to what they share. The 7th house and Venus are the Parashari significators of marriage, the Darakaraka is the Jaimini one, and they are two systems looking at the same thing. Where they disagree, the honest conclusion is that the marriage picture is mixed rather than that one is wrong.

Why do astrologers also look at the Navamsa?

Because the Navamsa is the marriage chart. The standard practice is to find the Darakaraka in the Rashi chart, then examine the sign it occupies in the Navamsa and the 7th house from it. That second layer is where much of the detail about married life is read.

How does this relate to the Upapada Lagna?

They are the two main Jaimini pointers to marriage and are used together.
